Rabbi

An honorary title for a Torah scholar, established in the early centuries CE. Today, it is also given to a prominent religious synagogue minister, often identified with the leader of a community. The highest religious official bears the title of Chief Rabbi.

* Derived from the word “Rabi”, which is in fact the clerical form of the word “Rav” with the possessive first person suffix, but used in excess as a nominative.

Romaniotes

It literally means “Romans”. Jews of the Byzantine Empire and their descendants. Until the 15th century, they constituted the majority of Jews in the Balkans, especially in Greece. They are linguistically (Graeco-Jewish dialect) and customarily (Minhag Romaniya) distinct.

Rosh Hashanah

The Jewish New Year. It literally means the Head of Time and is the first of the High Holy Days of Judaism
