Seder

Ceremony on the eve of Pesach (and the second night), with reading of the Haggadah and eating symbolic food.

Sefer Torah

A manuscript copy of the Torah kept in the Echal of the Synagogue in the form of a parchment wrapped in wooden uprights.


Sephardim

It literally means “ Hispanic ”. Jews originating from the Iberian Peninsula, who were scattered mainly in the Mediterranean after their persecution in 1492. Characterized by their Ladino language, which they use and their particular customs. The word “Sepharad” means Spain in Hebrew.


Shavuot

The feast commemorating the tradition of the Torah on Mount Sinai. Pentecost - 7 weeks after Pesach

Shmini Atzeret

The day on which the end of the harvest is celebrated. Sukot follows.


Simchat Torah

The day that celebrates the completion of the reading of the Torah and its resumption. Literally the 'Joy of Torah'.


Sukkot

The Feast of Tabernacles, which commemorates the wandering of the Jews in the desert after their exodus from Egypt.
